Great piece. It’s nice to hear appreciations for Stella Maris. There are so many meaningful passages in there. Alicia is certainly intelligent (like I would know, hah) even with the debilitating hallucinations that haunt her.

Thanks Paola to rise a topic I was always discussing with my parents ( both engineers with top grades) while me and my brother were not.. I’m always fascinated by “intelligent people= analytical / logical ones “ thinking of me and the others like me “ less intelligent “ 😎😜. Ps paola you are in the first group eh !

Very cool article!

I see premature so much talk about AGI when it is not clear what we mean with intelligence, and how human intelligence in particular works.

As for the energy saving part, my take (taken from Yann LeCun,Kahneman, and others) is that our brain developed to be energy efficient, molded by evolution to make a lot of good (but not perfect!) decisions without spending too many calories, in a world where chocolate cake had yet to be invented...

Totally agree! When Roberto Cingolani was at IIT showing iCub around he always talked about how our biological bodies and brains were vastly more efficient than the android's...!

I don't know how to define intelligence but I know it when I see it and you got it. Thank you for sharing. I hope some of it sticks so I can be intelligent too.

Years ago my friend Bruce Sesnovich ordered a large quantity of pencils that he had had embossed with the phrase "If I can't be very intelligent I don't want to be intelligent at all." He gave these pencils whenever he thought the recipient had earned one. I was his boss (at a computer company) at the time and he gave me such pencils on several occasions. I wish I had one of them today. Alas I was too stupid to put them in a place where I could later find them and they were lost to the void.

Thank you for your kindness. You can always make new pencils, can't you?
